This week we have been talking a lot about READING books. How do you read a book to yourself? Even if you don't know how to read the words, can you still read a book? What does it look like? How do you do it?
Well, after a lot of thinking and discussion, here are some of our ideas:
3 ways to read a book are:
1. Read the words
2. Retell a story you have heard before
3. Use the pictures to tell the story
When you are reading to yourself, what does it look like? Here is what we think:
1. Find a quiet and cozy spot all by yourself2. Choose a book that I like
3. My eyes are on the words and pictures
4. I try to keep my body still
5. I touch and track the words with my finger
6. I am building my stamina. (Yes, your child DOES know what that word means.)
So, we have started practicing reading because that is what good readers do. They practice and practice and practice reading! Isn't this exciting? Their excitement for reading has started to grow just in these first few days. I can't wait to watch them develop into real little readers. EXCITING!
What can you be doing at home to help?
1. Snuggle up with your child and read to them. Make sure you are tracking with your finger so they see the direction of the writing. As we begin to learn more sounds and words and you come to those while you are reading, include them. Have them read those words in the story.
2. Encourage your child to read to themselves. They should find a quiet and comfortable place and enjoy one of their favorite books. Be sure to make books visible and easily accessible in your home.
3. When friends or family come over CELEBRATE your child's reading and encourage them to read one of their paper books to your guests. This will help build their confidence as a reader.
4. Continue to work on letter names, letter sounds and sight words. This will help your child's literacy skills.
